Equality law doesn't apply to volunteers - Court of Appeal
Volunteers who are unpaid and do not have a contract are not protected by anti-discrimination legislation, according to a decision by the Court of Appeal reported in Civil Society and Third Sector.
The decision was hailed by a barrister from the employment and discrimination chambers Cloisters, James Galbraith-Marten, as a victory for the voluntary and community sector:
“The need to make adjustments for the disabled, and the cost of litigation, successful or otherwise, that would be generated from the extension of anti-discrimination rights, would be too great a financial burden for many of them to bear,” he said.
