Online consultation - new guidelines
ILP’s popular Democracy Days have included presentations on using social media and other new technologies for engaging people in consultation and campaigning.
Now the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has issued succinct guidelines for online public consultation which many organisations may find useful.
The guidelines suggest and explain the following principles:
- Begin the consultation process long before the consultation per se
- Identify organisations with the appropriate expertise and maintain an up-to-date database
- Explain the consultation procedure and how you will treat responses
- Simplify the process; provide all relevant documentation
- Allow adequate time for responses
- Analyse and summarise responses for formal discussion and publication on the website
- Report back to the public via the website and other channels
- Monitor your effectiveness
The intention of the guidelines is to help orgainsations make online public consultation as transparent and productive as possible.
